Civil War memorial, Doylestown PA

The Civil War monument near the county courthouse in Doylestown PA honors the 104th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, the "Ringgold Regiment." Recruitment and training began in 1861, and in November of that year 1,049 men department for Washington, D.C., to join the Army of the Potomac. In 1864, after three years of service, many of the men reenlisted, and after Richmond fell in 1865, they occupied Petersburg. Forty-six of them were killed in action, 3 were missing in action, 62 were taken prisoner, and 104 died in service. The moment was completed in 1868, and a memorial plaque claims it was one of the first Civil War memorial in the nation.
