16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
CIVIL
This 32 -foot water structure adorns the entrance of the Civil and Human Rights Museum. There is a calming effect as visitors pass through the flowing waters and look up to reflect on impactful phrases from the civil rights movement that are etched in the glass panels. The bright blue sky symbolizes how far one can go if only they persevere and absorb the experiences of those that have gone before us. This structure serves as a path from our past and gateway to our future.
