12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Close Encounters

Hawaiian Monk Seals are critically endangered with only a few hundred remaining. Their curious nature and potentially aggressive behavior has increasingly caused problems between humans and the seals. People are the number one threat against this species. Laws are in place to protect the Hawaiian Monk Seals from intentional harm due to interactions with humans. The markings on the back of this young male Monk Seal were created by local researchers using bleach as a non-invasive method of tracking him and his movements around the island. Success in controlling human involvement and thus lowering injuries and interruption of natural behaviors with this species has lead to a healthy growth of pup populations in Hawaii over the last year.
