18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
CLOSE portrait 10

In mid-March 2020 when Covid-19 was raging in NYC, and the world turned upside down, I went from being a street photographer to a shut-in, and I craved contact with people. I conceived a pandemic portrait project that I could do from my front stoop in Brooklyn. I found that people were happy to participate, as we shared a moment trying to make sense of this new reality. I made over 100 portraits, and I find looking into people’s eyes through these portraits gives me hope, and connecting with people is the most life affirming thing we can do right now.
