14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Cold, deep blue waters of Lake Superior

We are incredibly fortunate to have the water of Lake Superior border our state of Minnesota on the North Shore. It represents nature at its boldest and most powerful. Despite its beauty, it is formidable and intimidating: it is exceptionally cold and unpredictable. On this evening, in the period of minutes, the water turned from calm and peaceful to a churning whirlpool. The air temperature dropped fifteen degrees. And then moments later, the wind subsides and the water relaxes. Beyond the stunning appearance of the lake, the North Shore is a treat for all the senses, including the waves crashing on the rocks and the smell of fresh pine trees in the wind. It is an incredibly peaceful, pristine part of the world. But perhaps my favorite thing is what you don't hear: the noise of city life. :)
