During a hard freeze in the Netherlands, most of the canals in the north of Amsterdam were completely frozen over. For birds like this Heron, that severely limits their ability to find food. However, this heron was quite brilliant - it discovered that a small fountain in a canal (used to pump water out of a nearby pond) would prevent the surrounding waters from freezing. It also discovered than many small fish would become trapped in the top of this fountain, making it a prime spot to lay in wait for an unlucky fish during this snow storm.
