Reaching the Subway requires an exhausting hike along the Left Fork of North Creek. You find your route, cross and recoss the creek, and scramble over boulders. The hike begins and ends at the Left Fork Trailhead on the Kolob Terrace Road. Nine hours in and out, beginning with a goat trail descent into the North Fork. Near exhaustion, you reach the Subway and forget the aches and pains. You will have half-and- hour at best to photograph and absorb its beauty. Then back on the trail, barely making it up the goat trail as darkness arrives. The best photograph of the Subway that know of was made by an intrepid Utah photographer who photographed it in mid-winter, with ice stalactites hanging from the roof. That was one brave and rewarding photographic trek.
