Coming to dinner

Hippopotamus are usually thought of as residing in the water where they spend most of their day. In actuality, they aren’t great swimmers and graze on plants on land for the vast majority of their diet. Their nighttime environment is a network of trails that take them to grazing areas. Here a hippo walks on a small trail at night toward a camera trap, coming to have its dinner. Habitat loss has taken a toll on the population of hippos, which are an important part of the ecosystems in which they live. They are unique in that they fertilize lakes and rivers with nutrients found in the savannah plants that they eat. This photo was taken in June 2023 in Nyerere National Park, Tanzania.
