Common garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis
While exploring around a pond, I came across this common garter snake sunning itself on a hill. I spent about 5 minutes slowly approaching the snake, never allowing my shadow to go over the snake, never reaching toward the snake. It's only movement was a flick of it's tongue, trying to scent me. I love photographing snakes especially when I do not make them move, and can back away without ever upsetting these beautiful creatures.
