Many things about Tirana fascinated me, but the decision to let old monuments from the long gone communist era remain, unkempt and crumbling and unavoidable, struck me the most. Leaving them to be desecrated, hiked up, overgrown and graffitied sends a message far more powerful and defiant than simply erasing them.
