Community leaders prepare and secure a coffin to bring it to a public cemetery three islands away.

In some island communities like Lisondra in Surigao City, finding a resting place for your loved ones can be very tricky. With very limited land area, they usually ferry the dead to a bigger island which has a public cemetery. This was the final rites of my aunt, a public servant hence the Philippine flag. I find it to be a very somber but extremely beautiful ceremony to actually use a boat to transport her to her final resting place. This basically is reminiscent of old traditions of letting the river carry the dead to their final resting place. The respect is evident as the community members safely secured the coffin. It was an amazing experience which is still vividly embedded in my memory.
