19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Companion of nature.

In India, especially in the mountain regions, people still live a very organic and rooted life. They have a deep bonding and understanding of the nature and natural ways of living. Men and women walk many miles on the rough topography to cut and collect fodder for the domesticated animals. Devoid of easy access to modern conveyance, they generally carry the load on their head, which on an average is half of their body weight. Their body has an extraordinary capacity to endure adverse climatic conditions, low levels of oxygen and the difficulties of the high altitudes.
