The photo shows me sitting against a wall in my previous house, alongside my nephew - that photo was taken in my parents' garden. I took my self-portrait as part of a series on being transgender in Cape Town, and I found that the symbolism of my nephew covering his face conveyed strongly the kinds of feelings that I experience as a transgender person at times.
