Costas Hummingbird Sipping Nectar from Ocotillo Blossoms
Costa's Hummers and Ocotillos have co-developed in the Sonoran Desert. Ocotillos blossom once a year in the Sonoran Desert. While many insects and birds visit the blossoming Ocotillos, the Costa's Hummingbird time their presence to coincide with the arrival of the flowers. They are primary pollinators of the plant, though many other insects and birds also share the bounty. We look forward to the spectacle every spring - we can see this particular plant outside of the kitchen window of our house in the Tucson foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
