Courtship Dance

Group of Sudosukai – Wodaabe people celebrating the Gerewol festival at sunset (Chad). The Gerewol is an annual courtship ritual and competition mainly among the nomadic peoples of Niger and Chad. It is a beauty pageant for young men, who hope to be chosen by the girls of the tribe. The young men, adorned in elaborate ornaments and traditional face paint, gather in lines to dance and sing, competing for the attention of marriageable young women. The Gerewol takes place each year when the traditionally nomadic Wodaabe cattle herders meet at the southern edge of the Sahara before moving south to their dry season grazing lands.
