23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Cow

On a sunny yet misty afternoon, atop the open hills of Qingtian Gang, a few cows grazed freely. They focused entirely on the grass, completely indifferent to the fences or the presence of visitors. The cows on Yangmingshan were originally raised during the Japanese colonial period a century ago to support farming. As the need for them vanished over time, they continued to breed in the wild, becoming a self-sufficient feral herd.
