21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Crane Fly

This photograph was taken at a flower show in Coronado, CA. I took several photographs of beautiful floral displays and then I came upon this flying insect. When I got home, I found out that is a Crane fly, also known as a Mosquito Hawk or skeeter eater. However, the adult form does not eat mosquitos; only the insect larvae do. This insect species is one of the oldest known groups of flies still in existence; it has been around for about 250 million years.
