19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Crashing Waves in Maine

During a visit to Maine a northeaster with powerful winds rolled ashore so I grabbed my camera gear and headed out to see the surf. It proved to be a great photo opportunity in Cape Elizabeth. I set up my cameras and tripod on some high ground for safety and draped a jacket over the camera and lens. From my vantage point waves could be seen pounding the rocky coast where houses perched above the sea. It was such a dramatic demonstration of nature's power.
