Our world can in most cases be dangerous for smaller animals and also, the less people are the more smaller animals will be. Walking from the center of the town, the more uphill you go the more those animals would appear since this area is closer to the woods. I don't know if this little creature was killed by people or some other bigger animal, but it shows that nature as long as it's beautiful, sometimes can be really cruel.
