13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Cuban Art

I am enrolled in a Master’s Program at Antioch University New England and last spring signed up for Food Systems of Cuba which involved a ten-day trip to visit Cuba’s urban agricultural cooperatives. While traveling through Havana, I glanced into a gallery and saw this beautiful painting. I thought it odd to have the treadle sewing machine as part of the art but Cubans are the masters of reduce reuse and recycle since the beginning of their Special Period. I think Educational Travel represents the best in sustainable travel. It is more of a cultural exchange than just regular consumer tourism.
