13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Cuban Tin Man

I am enrolled in a Master’s Program at Antioch University New England and last spring signed up for Food Systems of Cuba which involved a ten-day trip to visit Cuba’s urban agricultural cooperatives. While traveling to an urban garden in the center of Havana, I came across this shopkeeper. Cuban's are the premier reduce reuse recycle society by necessity since the beginning of their Special Period. Small private enterprises like this shop are becoming more common as Cubans explore private entrepreneurship. I think Educational Travel represents the best in sustainable travel. It is more of a cultural exchange than just regular consumer tourism.
