14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Cuddling in the Cold
While photographing a polar bear mom and cub in their "denning" area under sunny skies for about 4 days, the program changed. Mom and cub moved out and stormy weather moved in. Overnight the pair had moved out and hiked about 10 miles away. Unfortunately, now while out in the open, Mother Nature unleashed a bit of her fury- snow and wind. But the sun did pop out from time to time so I was able to get a glimpse of what it is really like to be a polar bear family.
