21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Curious Guanacos

We had stopped to take pictures of the famous Torres del Paine mountains after a heavy snowfall. Some guanacos approached from the left and 'photobombed' the scene, but soon they became the main subjects of the photo. We waited patiently and quietly on the roadside so as not to scare them. Soon one of them came quite close, inspecting us with a curiosity that their descendants, the llamas, also have.
