16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Curtained
Two women wearing niqabs exit Philadelphia's 30th Street train station through a temporary plastic door curtain while a series of flags in the background complement the movement in the foreground. For me, this photograph prompts a consideration of the complicated relationship the American government has with the nation's incredibly diverse population, and the corresponding diversity of the American experience.
