16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Dancing through the night

It was taken during Nishi-Ichinobe Naked Festival, which takes place every January in Houtokuji-Yakushido, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The festival has been held to pray for good harvest and health since the Kamakura period. They kept on dancing and prayed to Buddhist god through the night.
