Dandi

Dandi is a ritual, where devotees, either alone or in groups, perform this act as a form of extreme devotion and penance. They lie flat on the ground on their stomach and pray to the concerned deity. In this picture, Durga Puja or worshipping of the Hindu Goddess Durga is being performed in a village in West Bengal. The women have gathered in groups and are praying for peace and harmony. The Durga Puja is 10 days long festival. It portrays the victory of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga overpowers evil Mahisasura, the buffalo demon.
