23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Day at the SS Red Oak Victory Museum
Now a museum, the SS Red Oak Victory was built in 87 days beginning August 15, 1944 at the Kaiser-Richmond shipyard in California. It’s a monument to those who built and served on the ships that remain "today as a symbol of national resolve and industrial might that won the Second World War.” The museum is a non-profit run by volunteers who share it’s history and significance and partners with Rosie the Riveter Trust to begin the first phase of renovation. There are self-guided or docent led tours and out reach to the community for events.
