Daydreams on the edge

This photo was taken in the historic city of Mardin, in what is now southeastern Turkey. The old city is built on a hillside, the buildings made of limestone, looking south over the Mesopotamian plains. In the city streets, three languages are currently spoken -- Kurdish, Turkish, and Arabic -- over the horizon is the Syrian border where struggles and war continue to take place
