18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Mobile
Daytime as California burned
Shot at 8:30am, 9/9/2020 the fires in surrounding counties shut out the sun for the day. Streetlights remained on and the air was unbreathable. A day projected to be 106 degrees became a cool toxic struggle. Ash rained down like snow, and for a day or two the pandemic lockdown became the lower priority story.
