Kashmir has been used by the Indian ruling classes as a playfield for fulfilment of their nationalist or rather pseudo-nationalist urge. Rather than winning the unity of hearts and minds, their reliance has been on enforcing unity under jackboots. This is the picture of the renowed Dal lake of Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir. The soothing calmness of the scene betrayed little inkling of the gathering storm. On August 5, 2019, the BJP led Central government at Delhi abrogated the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and enforced a lockdown in the valley. This picture deceives the turbulence that currently rocks an average Kashmiri’s life.
