Deer Isle Bridge October Evening
Taken from Little Deer Isle, the photo shows the 1939 Deer Isle Bridge, the first bridge connecting the island to the mainland. I was headed to Stonington on a moody October evening and pulled over to take a walk out to the boat launch on the Eggemoggin Reach. I put this in the "American experience" category because the bridge greatly changed the lives of the inhabitants of Deer Isle, traditionally lobstermen and, and in the 19th century, granite workers, who had only been able to come and go from the island by boat before the bridge was built. It also increased tourism to the island.
