My mother and I were hiking to Independence Monument in Colorado National Monument, Colorado, when we came across a herd of Desert Bighorn Sheep. There were two males, a handful of ewes, and many lambs – all coming down from a red sandstone escarpment. We sat and watched them graze along the Great Unconformity (a geologic boundary), eating shrubs growing from rock that is over billion years old! The lambs would sometimes make little hops or jumps and play-fight with their tiny horns. On our way out of the canyon, we interrupted a small flock of Gambel's Quail. Unfortunately, they were too fast to photograph.
