16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Desert Eagle

Aguilas del Desierto (“Eagles of the Desert”) is a group of volunteers that searches the deserts of California and Arizona along the U.S.-Mexico border looking for the remains of migrants. When remains are found, the local authorities are contacted so that the remains can be recovered, identity established and next of kin contacted. The identities of over 2,000 remains (men, women and children) are still unknown. On this search, we were looking for the remains of a 39-year-old male who had been living and working in the U.S. for 19 years and was trying to make it back to his wife and 9-year-old daughter in Miami after visiting his parents in Mexico. When remains are found, a cross is left in respect and commemoration. This is the American experience for some.
