Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Hispanic Americans recognize El Dia de los Muertos, perhaps the most popular holiday in Latin America. Families come together to honor their ancestors, recognizing that without their labor, sacrifice, honor and memories, that they would not be there. The inevitability of death is accepted rather than feared. This holiday goes back to the Aztecs, who valued feather similarly to jade and turquoise in Mesoamerica. They were considered to have properties of fertility, abundance, riches and power and those who wore them were associated with divine powers.
