Diablo de San Pedro
The “Devil’s Dance” was created by African slaves brought to Mexico by the Spaniards during Colonisation. It was a ritual dedicated to the Black God Ruja, who they honored and asked for freedom. Over time Mexicans have given new religious meaning to the traditional dance. This image was taken during La Guelaguetza ("offering" in Zapotec), a celebration of indigenous cultures through dance, taking place in the streets of Centro Oaxaca every July.
