Diamond Drops on Orchid Petals

I photographed this Dactylorhiza sambucina orchid at the sunset, after a heavy summer storm. The raindrops resembled scattered sparkling diamonds on the flower petals. The specific epithet, sambucina, has its origin in the Latin word sambūcus, a name given to the members of the Sambucus genus, known as the European Elderberries. Sambucus nigra, also known as the Honeysuckle, was once regarded as one of the most magically powerful of all plants. The name is a reference to the poignant fragrance of the flowers, which emit an Elder-like scent, hence its vernacular name, the Elder Flowered Orchid (Orchids of Romania, by Nora De Angelli & Dan Anghelescu, 2020).
