15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Early morning in May at Mentor Headlands Beach (Ohio)
I arrived at the beach around 7:30 a.m. intent on a morning of kayaking on Lake Erie. With 12-14 mph winds out of the northeast I decided to wait a bit and strolled the beach with my Nikon D5300 and tripod in tow. The skies were heavily laden with seemingly motionless clouds yet the morning sun struggled for an opening on the horizon.
