19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Echo

This shell belongs to my housemate, Owen. I thought it would be interesting to juxtapose an object I associate it with the Summer and tropical parts of the world with snow, which is so strongly connected to the Winter and colder climates. The shell reminded me of a human ear, and I like the way you can hold a shell up to your own ear and supposedly hear the echo of the sea. I dislike the cold, so for me this image represents the promise of warmer days to come.
