Echoes of the Ancestors

A danza azteca performer channels ancestral spirit and strength during the annual Día de los Muertos celebration in Round Rock, Texas. Danza Azteca, embodies the spiritual connection between humanity, nature, and the cosmos. With intricate steps, rhythmic drumbeats, and elaborate costumes, performers honor their ancestors, carrying forward centuries-old traditions. Together, these cultural expressions remind us of the timeless bond between the living and the departed. I spent most of the day anticipating the Danza Azteca performers. Their outfits, dances, synced beats of the drums mesmerizing. I heard the drums, long before I saw the Danza Azteca making their way down the road. I quickly ran to middle of the closed off road, camera in hand. The drums grew louder and before I knew it, the dancers were square in front of me. Their feathers flowing in the wind with each spin. Their faces and bodies each adorned with paint and headdresses. For a brief moment as the group passed through, Jose, the dancer featured in the photo and I locked attention and the photo was created. Just like that, the moment passed, the drums fading away as the dancers continued their journey.
