20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Eiffel Tower in Paris, France

A monument constructed between 1887 and 1889, which has become the world's most visited attraction. It's named after lead engineer Gustave Eiffel, but is known to locals as 'La Dame de Fer', or 'Iron Lady'. When built its aesthetics were criticized by some artists, but it's now a cultural icon of France.
