23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Drone/Aerial
Electric Brine

At the edge of the San Francisco Bay, evaporation ponds glow red with dense microbial blooms, their straight boundaries overlaying the soft, branching traces of the original wetlands. Power lines stretch across the scene, casting long shadows that echo the faint, natural channels below. Although many of these ponds are now being opened back to the tides, the geometry of industry still shapes the landscape. From the air, the tension between the two becomes unmistakable — a wetland engineered and wild.
