Elephants are revered creatures in Thailand. In Chiang Mai, there are dozens of elephant sanctuaries where sick or old elephants are cared for. Elephants are free to roam around the sanctuary compound, often building decade-long bonds with their mahouts (caretakers) and mahouts’ families. The children of mahouts in particular, build very strong relationships with these elephants.
