Amboseli was facing a severe drought when I visited in October 2022. It was so dry that, during my daily game drives, we frequently came across the carcasses of animals which had succumbed to thirst. The park’s elephants, in particular, had to make frequent long treks in order to find sufficient sustenance. In this picture, a haze of dust surrounds an elephant herd as it traipses across the barren landscape. The cloud-strewn majesty of Mount Kilimanjaro fills the background. I converted the photograph to black and white to accentuate the desolation and desperation of the scene.
