23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Emerald Perch

A Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Ara severus) sits alone on the tip of a bare branch, its green body and long tail contrasted with a nearly white sky. The chestnut patch above its beak, along with hints of blue and red in the feathers, mark it as one of Tambopata’s most widespread mini-macaws. Often found in pairs or small groups, Chestnut-fronted Macaws are social, intelligent, and thrive in riverine forests of lowland Peru. This image highlights their presence in the forests of Tambopata—alert, curious, and perfectly adapted to the sparse canopy edge.
