Whooper swans gather at the shore of Lake Kussharo, where the flow of hot water from a natural hot spring provides a warm refuge. The swans particularly appreciate this cozy haven in the face of harsh temperatures that can drop as low as -30°C. As steam rises, it envelops the surroundings in a mystical atmosphere. While not breeding on Hokkaido, whooper swans migrate to the area for overwintering.
