14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Encounter

For several months last autumn caused fires ravaged the island of Borneo. In Tajung Puting National Paque, the fire was just 1 km from the park boundary. For weeks, a permanent fog covered forest, with a strong smell of burning. Orangutans, frightened, is more than ever closer to humans. My first encounter in these forests, was with this female and her calf. Far from being frightened and protect breeding, seeking our company, stopping every few steps to wait for us on the road. It was a very special meeting. Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).
