15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
End of the Road
This is the famous "Magic Bus 142" in Denali National Park. How the bus got abandoned here is an interesting story in itself. These days, it is known to most as the final resting place of Christopher McCandless, and immortalised in Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild". Last month marked exactly 25 years since McCandless' passing. I was fortunate enough to be one of the small proportion of visitors to the bus to see it in winter. Most people visit by trekking to the site in summer, braving bears and raging rivers. Winter is an entirely different experience - complete silence, the odd moose, and a landscape that feels frozen in time. Alaska in her element.
