Endangered El Segundo Blue Butterflies in a Mating Dance
A pair of endangered El Segundo Blue (Euphilotes allyni) butterflies mate while perched on their host plant, Seacliff buckwheat (Erigonum parvifolium). A second male, attracted by the female's pheromones, tries to interrupt the action. These diminutive butterflies are about the size of a dime. This group was photographed in their habitat at Dockweiler State Beach, which has one of the only populations accessible to the public. Most of the other remaining habitats are behind fences on private reserves. The butterflies are viewable in adult form for about one month each year, and this image was captured during the second season I photographed them.
