17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Erosion of the Little Grand Canyon

Providence Canyon of Stewart County, Georgia, also called the Little Grand Canyon, gives a small taste of western terrain with the addition of greenery to those in the East. Although this canyon is man-made, the layering of white minerals and deep reds of clay create a beautiful pattern that Easterners would be unable to admire in such an expanse otherwise. In Birmingham, Alabama, where I am from, it is difficult to come across unique scenery or wonders of nature, so visiting a place that, in a very minor way, resembles the colors and texture of Arizonian landscape was worth the drive.
