The desolate beauty of Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru (furthest back) can be seen here as they spewed plumes of ashes and steam into the air while the inactive Mount Batok sat silently on the caldera floor nearby. Mount Bromo is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, if not the world. The historical record indicates eruptions every few years since 1804 prompting closure of airports in Jawa and geologic evidence indicates eruptions at least several hundred years earlier. Highly active in nature and deadlier than Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru periodically erupts every 20-30 minutes with ash emission up to 400m above the crater. Semeru volcano has been the site of numerous fatalities and has brought significant destruction to the vicinity, the most recent being in year 2000.
